The Hobbit - Rhodes (Barkly East, Senqu) Minimize

The Hobbit is in the historical village of Rhodes in the valley of the Bell River, which runs next to the village.
The whole village has been declared a National Monument. Rhodes was established on the farm “Tintern” early in the 1890’s, and was at one stage a thriving trading centre with 3 hotels, a school with over 140 children and many businesses. Motorised transport lead to the demise of the town as a trading centre, but the character remains. After years of neglect, owners have gone to considerable trouble to restore cottages.

The Hobbit is over 90 years old and is conveniently situated at the entrance to the village opposite the coffee shop. It is a fine example of the early “dorpshuis”, i.e. it has a stoep, which differentiates the style from the “nagmaalhuisies”. The cottage has recently had electricity installed and is decorated and furnished to maintain the ambience of its heritage. A recent refurbishing project included the installation of an electric geyser, an adiitional bathroom and private back verandah leading onto an enclosed garden.

The Hobbit "Nagmal Huisie" Rhodes

Until relatively recently ablutions were performed in a zinc tub and the “long-drop” in the back yard. Sadly the long-drop has been revamped into a modern toilet as part of our recent upgrade where we added a verandah to the back of the house.

There is a visitors book in which we would appreciate your comments. We wish you a pleasant stay and hope you enjoy Rhodes as much as we do.

In the main house, there are 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with 1 three quarter bed, both of which lead onto a bathroom with a bath toilet and wash basin. All bedding & towels included. Electric blankets are provided on all beds. Electric Geyser provides hot water (gas geyser are used as standby)

The living area includes a seperate lounge leading into a small dining room. The Dining room leads out onto a private back verandah overlooking an enclosed garden. TV (full HD) is installed with limited number of channels available. Bring your own decoder !  Crockery and cutlery have been collected over the years, and must be treated with the respect their age demands. Antique plates do not take to excessive heating and may not be placed in a microwave oven. There is an electric refrigerator, toaster, kettle microwave and gas stove with oven . There is an anthracite heaters that is lit in the winter months.
The annex leading off the front verandah comprises a double room with an en suite bathroom (shower toilet and wash basin), and a twin bedroom that has a wash basin in the room and access to a seperate toilet on the back verandah and its own anthracite heater. The twin  bedroom has a door leading onto an verandar and  enclosed garden area.
The front stoep has garden benches for those who would like to relax with a cup of coffee and observe ‘the passing show’. In the evening there are some beautiful sunsets to be seen (at about sun-downer time). The back garden includes a braai area with a garden table and chairs, and has easy access to the kitchen. We have built a verandah leading from the dining room and annex which is not reflected in the picture below.

The house is serviced by our housekeeper. She is responsible for cleaning the house and making the beds. An additional fee will be charged if cooking, and washing & ironing are required.
